Happy birthday, my little guy

first few minutes ex utero

I cannot believe you’re already a year old.  Where has this year gone?

You are truly the easiest baby in the world, and we are so blessed to have you in our family.  A year ago last night, your daddy and I were actually a little teary eyed, thinking that it was the last night it would just be us and your sister.  But now, as predicted, we can’t imagine life without you.

You’re still not walking, and for that, we are thankful.  With your sister, I was impatient for every little milestone.  With you, I’m enjoying your baby-ness.  I know all your growing up will come with time.

You’re great being carted around everywhere.  You love being held, which took us by surprise – your sister couldn’t wait to get away from us the moment she could.  You’re still nursing; almost twice as long as my firstborn.  More surprises await, I’m sure.

It seems like yesterday I could keep you on our bed, and you would hang out contentedly forever.  But now, you can pull yourself up on your own, say “uh oh,” and put all sorts of things into containers.  You prefer putting toys away rather than getting them out, much to your sister’s chagrin.  We have a feeling you’ll be the sort of baby that will hide our keys in the laundry hamper, just for fun.

We love you so much, little guy.  At a year old, you’ve already tallied up more countries than many adults reach in their lifetime.  No doubt your list will grow.  God has poured out His good mercies on us when He gave you such an easy-going personality.  For all the flights, ferries, and metros you board, you can chill with the best of them.

You have an enormous fan base overseas, what with your blue eyes and all. May you continue to have more grace than your mama when it comes to dealing with swarms of total strangers.

And just like we thought, you make us even more of a family than we ever thought possible.

I look forward to this next year, when I will savor all the baby-ness squeezed out in you.  I love you, little boy.  Happy birthday!

    Tsh,

I have always felt an odd connection to your experiences with your son because my son was born almost exactly at the same time. This post completely reaffirms that!

First there is the newborn pic – the outfit he is wearing is the same one we often put my little man in as a newborn. Then the fact that both of our sons are still not walking (which, like you, I am fine with). The general laid back personality, the nursing, the throngs of adoring women, the taking toys out instead of putting away, hiding important things . . . I swear if it wasn’t for the older sis and jet-setting, this could be about my son!

The part that really got me about your birthday letter to your son is the idea that he made your family feel more complete. That is exactly what I wrote to my son in his birthday post, and I can’t think of a better feeling. There is truly something special about mommies and their sons.

Happy belated birthday to your sweet little man! And many blessings to you and yours in 2009.
