Ann at Holy Experience has an excellent post this morning that eloquently depicts the quote in my Treadmarks banner above (and is ultimately my favorite CS Lewis quote).

There are better things ahead than any we leave behind. Lewis was indeed talking about our true birth, when we actually become fully complete face-to-face with our Lord. And as we exist as children of God in earthling suits, we have the hope, the privledge, nay – the responsibility, to firmly believe that Home awaits us, and that life here is so very short indeed. This should permeate our day-to-dayness, how we interact with each other, how we parent, how we can scrub the kitchen sink with joy.

Do you remember, as a child, when you’re put to sleep somewhere else (like a friend’s house), and then your parents claim you, drive you home, and put you in your own bed – and then you awake the next morning, in the comfort of your surroundings with your own pillow and blankets? That feeling of aaaahhhh – exactly where I should be. That’s a tiny taste of what heaven will be like – we awake and say, Aaahhh. Exactly where I should be. It is Home. It won’t be like earth, only better, it will be EXACTLY what we were made for.

I have a friend who was debating several years ago about continuing his education in Scotland, or moving on to what he suspected was the Better Plan. He realized that this would be his only chance to study abroad, that if ever in this life he would do so, he should grab the opportunity now. But he knew the Lord was moving him on. He prayed about it, wrestled over it, and God comforted him with this – he can live in Scotland and study abroad in Heaven. Sounds silly, and trite, and it is, actually – obviously Heaven will be infintestimally better than Scotland. But the point is that those things we long for on earth, things that we’re just sure would make life complete, would fill our heart, would finally calm that “bug” in us that wants to run wild, is really our longing for Home. We will remain restless until we get there. Because that’s what we’re made for.
