Like a Rhinestone Cowboy

Ironically, I thought yesterday that I should blog today about how much better I feel lately since I’ve been going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. But then I babysat Holden and Nellie last night and got home at 1 a.m. So much for that.

So I was sitting here, trying to shake off sleepiness (not to mention that we ran out of coffee), and I got to daydreaming about a few fun, lighthearted memories from my past. And instead of forcing deepness, why not just share what I’m spacing out about anyway?

In March of 2000, 10 of us got together for a week in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Our route from London to Dublin included a looong train ride to Holyhead, Wales, where we then took a ferry to Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. The train was uncomfortable, we tried to get some sleep on plastic seats, it was the middle of the night, and there were two kids running up and down the train car, yelling and poking at strangers trying to sleep. Kristi chucked hunks of bread at them, to no avail. She and I shared a seat, and to drown out the noise, we shared her headphones and listened to Red Hot Chili Peppers (and to this day, any time I hear anything from Californication, I think of this train ride). Later down the tracks, a VERY drunk Irish guy came sauntering into our train car, complete with skis in hand. He was talking very loudly to no one in particular about his ski trip to the Alps, and Jeff, being the friendly guy he is, struck up a conversation with him. But it didn’t take Jeff long to realize he would not be having a logical dialogue with him, so he and Jason, who was sitting next to Jeff, started just joking around with this guy. The guy asked them where they were from, and when they said, “Texas,” the drunk guy immediately started singing “Rhinestone Cowboy,” one of the funniest and oddest sounds I’d ever heard, in that he was both drunk and Irish. We were all laughing uncontrollably, especially because he would not stop, but also because we were deliriously sleepy.

Sigh… There are so many other great stories from that trip, but I’ll save them for another time when I have nothing to say.

Ah, those were the days…I haven’t thought about that in a long time. Another trip like that sounds great right about now…well, with hotels instead of trains for sleeping.
