Land of the Free and the Home of the Big, Shiny Stores

Just got back from Target.  Yes, it was a tad insane to go there less than 24 hours after arriving in the States, but our luggage still hasn’t arrived, and I – quite literally – needed a shirt for my back.  I’m wearing my mom’s shirt at the moment.

Here are my first impressions from venturing out on a shopping trip:

  • I’m exhausted from the sheer amount of choices.  I’d find myself frozen when I needed to make a decision, as though I was fearful of making a wrong one.
  • Target was not crowded.  It was sooooo nice.  I feel like every store is crowded where we live, so it was nice not to worry about bumping in to anyone.
  • The shopping carts steered where I wanted them to go.
  • The aisles were nice and wide.
  • Coupons, glorious coupons!  It was so fun to use them again.  Baby carrots, $1.29.  Coupon for $1 off.  Total = $.29.  Awww yeah.
  • Possibly best of all, things were cheap.  At least compared to what I’m used to.  I got a t-shirt for $6 – the same shirt would be a minimum of $20 in our neighborhood.
  • I forgot how much I adore the dollar section at the front of the store.  So fun.  I got 8 cute fall cloth napkins.

We needed tons of stuff (remember, we hardly brought anything, and what we did bring has yet to arrive from the airport), but I still had a hard time making decisions.  I had to remind myself that these prices would relatively stay the same the whole time we’re here.  And that Target isn’t going anywhere.

I’m starting to shake with jet lag (it’s 5:15 right now, but my body thinks it’s 1:15 a.m.), so I’m going to rest a bit before dinner.

I’m right there with ya on the overwhelmed-by-choices thing! For me it always happened in the cereal aisle. :) (I’m an MK and lived in Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea and Kenya.)

I remember the first time we came home, I shopped for over an hour and only had one thing in my cart! :) It is so amazing all the choices!
I actually just posted on the subject yesterday so when I saw your post here, I had to comment! :) Mine is the 6 months in version. :) It’s weird to me that I didn’t have any trouble until now…culture stress! Gotta love it!
    Blessings!
